Remodel Rough-In, Fixture Installation, and Appliance Hookups

A remodel splits the plumbing into two visits weeks apart. Rough-in happens with the walls open, relocating and extending supply and drain lines to where the new layout puts them. Finish installation happens once surfaces are done, setting the fixtures and making the final connections. Both get handled, scheduled around the other trades so nobody is held up waiting on plumbing.

Fixture installation on faucets, toilets, sinks, and disposals you bought yourself is common and there is no markup game in it. Two things are worth knowing. Open the box and check every part before install day, since missing supply lines and mounting hardware are the usual cause of a return visit. And the one-year warranty covers the installation work, while the fixture itself is covered by its own manufacturer warranty.

Whether this needs a licensed plumber depends on what is already there. Connecting to existing, accessible lines is often straightforward. Moving or extending supply or drain lines is regulated work. For a refrigerator or ice maker with no line in place, one gets run from the nearest cold supply with a properly rated shutoff valve at the connection, rather than a saddle valve, which is the fitting most likely to leak years later.

A softener installs at the main water entry point, so it is largely independent of a kitchen or bathroom project and can be scheduled either way. A reverse osmosis system goes under the kitchen sink and needs a dedicated faucet hole in the countertop, which is far easier to plan before the counter is fabricated than to drill into finished stone afterward. Adding an exterior connection means running new supply through the wall assembly and sealing the penetration properly, which is what separates a hose bib that lasts from one that works water into the stucco behind it. Anti-siphon protection is required on exterior faucets. The run, the valve, and the seal all get set so the connection stays watertight where it passes through the building envelope.

Adding plumbing where none existed means supply, drain, and venting all have to reach the space, and venting is the part that gets underestimated. Drains without proper venting gurgle, drain slowly, and pull traps dry, which is how sewer smell ends up in a new laundry room.
